In the world of design furniture, there are creations that simply fulfill a purpose, and
others that transcend it, transforming matter into meaning. The AITAI Table,
designed by Kengo Kuma for MOR Design, belongs to this rare second kind: a piece
that shapes the way we experience balance and form.
Rooted in the poetic simplicity of Japanese design, the AITAI Table draws inspiration
from the soft triangular form of the onigiri, an elemental shape that carries both
cultural resonance and Design balance. The piece reflects Kuma’s philosophy of
harmony between nature and structure, where every form arises from intention and
balance.
At once sculptural and functional, the table reveals a dialogue between Portuguese
Lioz limestone and refined steel. The stone top, with its natural veins and tactile
surface, appears to float above a three-legged steel frame, a gesture that captures
equilibrium through minimal means. What appears weightless is, in truth, a feat of
precision and balance, a composition where geology meets geometry, and where
the raw becomes refined.
Each AITAI Table is one of a kind, shaped by the natural variations of Portuguese Lioz.
Handcrafted in Portugal, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to produce, allowing time for the
stone’s individuality, and the precision of its making, to emerge.
The AITAI Table celebrates the meeting of Japanese sensibility and Portuguese
craftsmanship. Its construction reflects MOR Design’s commitment to materials of
lasting integrity and forms of enduring relevance, where geological time meets
contemporary design.
Unveiled on October 4th at Casa da Arquitetura in Porto with Kengo Kuma and his
team, the AITAI Table reflects the designer’s vision of harmony between nature,
proportion, and emotion. Durable by nature and precise in form, it embodies both
architectural clarity and sculptural presence.
The AITAI Table is now available joining the growing AITAI Collection by Kengo Kuma.
A testament to harmony, restraint, and enduring design, the AITAI Table invites the
eye to rest, and the mind to slow down.
